Homemade Croutons

prep time:10 minutes
cook time:15 minutes
total time:25 minutes
The key to this recipe is using very stale, dry bread, which absorbs the oil and seasonings properly without getting soggy. If your bread is still somewhat fresh, cut it into cubes and let it sit out on the counter for a few hours to dry out before you begin.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups stale bread cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 3 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning or a mix of dried oregano, basil, and thyme
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375°F.
  • Toss bread cubes with olive oil in a large bowl.
  • Mix garlic powder, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper.
  • Sprinkle seasoning over bread cubes and mix to coat evenly.
  • Spread cubes in a single layer on baking sheet.
  • Bake 10-15 minutes, tossing halfway, until golden and crisp.
  • Cool completely on baking sheet before storing.

Notes

Use stale bread for best texture. Store in airtight container.
