Homemade Croutons

Jump to Recipe

Ingredients (~4 cups)

  • 4 cups stale bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 3 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning (or a mix of dried oregano, basil, and thyme)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

Make the Croutons

Preheat your oven to ~375°F.

Place the bread cubes in a large mixing bowl. Drizzle the 3 Tbsp of olive oil over them.

In a small bowl, combine the garlic powder, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper.

Sprinkle this seasoning blend over the oiled bread cubes. Use your hands or a spatula to toss everything together until the cubes are evenly coated.

Spread the seasoned cubes in a single, even layer on a large baking sheet.

Bake for ~10-15 minutes, tossing the croutons halfway through the baking time.

The croutons are done when they are golden brown, crispy, and completely dry.

Let them cool completely on the baking sheet before storing them in an airtight container.

The key to this recipe is using very stale, dry bread, which absorbs the oil and seasonings properly without getting soggy. If your bread is still somewhat fresh, cut it into cubes and let it sit out on the counter for a few hours to dry out before you begin.
