Tartar Sauce

Jump to Recipe

Ingredients (~1.5 cups)

  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup dill pickles, finely diced
  • 2 Tbsp capers, finely chopped
  • 2 tsp dried dill (or 2 Tbsp fresh dill, minced)
  • 1 tsp dijon mustard
  • 2-4 Tbsp lemon juice
  • Salt & pepper to taste

Make the Sauce

Place the mayonnaise, diced pickles, capers, dill, and dijon mustard into a medium bowl.

Add 2 Tbsp of lemon juice to start.

Stir everything together until it is well combined.

Taste the sauce. If you prefer it thinner or tangier, add more lemon juice. Add salt and pepper to your liking.

You must let the sauce sit in the fridge for at least 30 minutes before serving. The flavors need time to meld together; it will taste much better after it rests.

Homemade tartar sauce is significantly better than store-bought and is extremely simple to make. This recipe is just a matter of mixing mayonnaise with classic add-ins: diced pickles, capers, lemon juice, and dill. Letting the sauce sit for at least 30 minutes is the most important step, as it allows the flavors to meld.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup dill pickles finely diced
  • 2 Tbsp capers finely chopped
  • 2 tsp dried dill or 2 Tbsp fresh dill, minced
  • 1 tsp dijon mustard
  • 2-4 Tbsp lemon juice
  • Salt & pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Combine mayonnaise, diced pickles, capers, dill, and dijon mustard in a medium bowl.
  • Add 2 Tbsp lemon juice and stir until well mixed.
  • Taste and adjust with additional lemon juice, salt, and pepper as needed.
  • Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving to blend flavors.

Notes

Sauce will taste better after resting in the fridge.
